Stage 1, now available online

Stage 1 is the first course in MGR’s hydraulic training range, and from September you can take it without leaving your desk.

It is built for people who work with or around hydraulic systems and need to properly understand what they are looking at – how a system is put together, what each component is doing, how to read a schematic, and why systems behave the way they do. It assumes no previous hydraulics training. If your team can follow the principles but have learned the job by picking it up as they go, Stage 1 fills in what sits underneath.

The course is typically delivered over one day, and every delegate receives course notes and a work pack.

What is hydraulics?

How hydraulics developed, how it is used, and where it is used.

What is in a hydraulic system?

A look at the components that make up a hydraulic system and the role each one plays.

Hydraulic symbols

What hydraulic symbols are for and familiarisation with the different types. You will be shown a schematic and asked to identify the components in it – so you leave able to read a circuit diagram, not just recognise one.

Hydraulic components

A detailed look at every component in a hydraulic system: pumps, control valves, filters, hydraulic cylinders, instruments, pipes and hoses.

Seeing the system work, not just hearing about it

The hardest part of learning hydraulics is that the important things are invisible. Pressure, flow and speed all happen inside sealed components, and no amount of description quite replaces watching them behave.

MGR teaches Stage 1 using Automation Studio circuit simulations, running live hydraulic circuits on screen and showing pressure, flow and speed as they change. You see what the schematic is actually doing.

This is one of the few areas where the online format is genuinely better than a classroom. Everyone gets a clear, full-size view of the simulation on their own screen, rather than a projected image from the back of a training room.

How the live online format works

Everything happens live. MGR’s Engineering Director runs the session over Microsoft Teams during the working day, teaching from real circuit diagrams and real system examples, and you ask questions as they occur to you rather than emailing afterwards and waiting.

  • Nothing to install beyond Teams. A joining link and your course materials are sent before the course.
  • Attend from your desk, your site office or from home. No travel, no overnight stay, no day lost getting there – for most teams a bigger saving than the course fee itself.
  • Taught by the person who does the work. MGR’s training is led by a working hydraulics engineer who spends the rest of the week designing, diagnosing and fault-finding on real systems, not by a full-time trainer delivering someone else’s material.
  • Independent. MGR sells no components and represents no manufacturer, so the training is about what is right for your system rather than what someone is trying to sell you.
