About This Course
The Stage 1 Hydraulic System Training course is the starting point in MGR Fluid Engineering’s hydraulic training range. It is designed for anyone who works with, or around, hydraulic systems and wants to understand how they function — from the principles behind hydraulics to the individual components that make up a working system.
The course is delivered over one day and combines clear, structured tuition with live circuit simulations using Automation Studio software, so you can see pressure, flow and speed in action — not just on paper. Each delegate receives a full set of course notes and a work pack to take away.
What the Course Covers
What Is Hydraulics?
We start with the fundamentals – how hydraulics was developed, why it is used in modern industry, and the wide range of applications where hydraulic systems are put to work. By the end of this section, delegates understand the principles of fluid power and why hydraulics is such an effective way to transmit force and motion.
What's in a Hydraulic System?
A clear walkthrough of the key components that make up a hydraulic system and what each one does. We look at how the components interact with each other as part of a complete working circuit, giving you a mental model of the whole system rather than isolated parts.
Hydraulic Symbols
Hydraulic schematics use a standardised set of symbols to represent components and circuits. This section covers how to read and interpret those symbols, with delegates shown a real schematic and asked to identify the components – building the practical skill of reading a hydraulic drawing.
Hydraulic Components In Detail
A detailed look at each of the main hydraulic components found in industrial systems:
- Pumps – types of hydraulic pump, how they work and how they generate flow
- Control valves – directional, pressure and flow control valves and their role in the circuit
- Filters – why filtration matters and how contamination is controlled
- Hydraulic cylinders – how cylinders convert hydraulic pressure into mechanical force and movement
- Instruments – gauges, sensors and monitoring equipment
- Pipes and hoses – connections, ratings and correct specification
Practical Training With Live Simulations
All MGR training uses Automation Studio — specialist hydraulic circuit simulation software that brings circuits to life on screen. You can see how changes in pressure, flow and component settings affect the behaviour of the whole system in real time. This visual approach makes abstract concepts immediately clear and is one of the things delegates consistently find most valuable about our courses.
Training is delivered on-site at your premises, wherever you are in the UK, so your team can learn in a familiar environment without the cost and disruption of travelling to an external venue. We can work around your shift patterns and operational requirements.
Who Is This Course For?
Stage 1 is the right starting point if you or your team:
- Are new to working with hydraulic systems and want a structured introduction
- Work in maintenance, operations or engineering and need a better understanding of the systems you manage
- Have practical experience with hydraulics but no formal training
- Want to understand hydraulic schematics and be able to read and interpret circuit diagrams
- Are preparing to progress to Stage 2 or Stage 3 of MGR’s hydraulic training programme
No prior knowledge of hydraulics is required. The course is designed to be accessible whether you are completely new to the subject or have some hands-on experience and want to formalise your understanding.
What's Included
- Full one-day training session delivered at your site
- Comprehensive course notes covering all topics
- Work pack for reference and reinforcement after the course
- Live hydraulic circuit simulations using Automation Studio
- Certificate of attendance
